The Town of Islip is one of ten towns in Suffolk County, New York. It is located on the south shore of Long Island and as of the 2000 census, had a population of 322,612. William Nicoll became a patentee of the east end of what is now the Town of Islip which was purchased in 1683. Shipping became a major factor in the growth of the town. By 1825, it was necessary to install a Fire Island light across the Great South Bay. Regular ferry service between Bay Shore and Fire Island began in 1862.
